If the immune system is boosted in sleep. How much sleep is needed?

Question: What if you are just laying there resting, does that work in boosting the immune system? or do you have to be asleep for it to work?

Answer: The body doesn't actually require regular sleep at all - it can work perfectly well with regular rest as you rightly suggest. BUT the brain - which regulates immune function and so much else - needs it desperately. The brain requires on average 8-9 hours a night (most people get slightly too little at 7-8). This sleep enables the brain to regulate appetite, growth, immunity and more. Many people now believe there is a connection between not getting enough sleep and developing cancer. It is also crucial to sleep in a properly dark room to achieve the real restorative effects of sleep - so no TV, computers, flashing clocks, or lights of any kind. It must be completely dark - get black-out curtains if you can. It's funny, but - even if you thought you were sleeping well before - you will really feel the difference!

Why do I feel more awake in the morning when I eat before I sleep?

Question: I wasn't doing good with my grades, and one of the things I changed was to not be afraid of eating before sleeping. I felt more awake in the morning and my grades got a lot better. Is this all just psychological?

Answer: You should not sleep before your eating.
